    Late-Summer Varroa: Why Your Late-July Mite Check Decides Whether Your Bees See Spring

    If you do only one thing for your bees between now and winter, make it this: get an honest varroa count in the next couple of weeks, and act on it. The mite check you take in late July and August is, without exaggeration, the most consequential of the entire beekeeping year.

    Here is why — and exactly what to do.

    The winter bees are being made right now

    Through most of the summer, a worker bee lives about six weeks. But the bees your colony is raising now, in late summer and early fall, are different. These are the "winter bees" — physiologically distinct, fat-bodied bees that live for months and carry the colony through to spring.

    Varroa mites feed on developing bees in the brood. When mite levels are high while the winter bees are being reared, those long-lived bees are raised sick — shorter-lived, weaker, and carrying more virus. The colony can look fine in September, cluster in November, and still be dead by February. Mites feeding on the winter bees are the single biggest reason healthy-looking colonies fail to survive winter.

    That is what makes the late-summer count so important. A clean colony going into fall is the best predictor of overwintering success there is. A dirty one is a slow-motion loss you can still prevent — if you catch it now.

    Step 1: Take a real count, not a guess

    Eyeballing does not work; by the time you spot mites riding on adult bees, the infestation is already severe. Do a wash instead:

    • Collect about a half cup of bees — roughly 300 — from a brood frame, taking care not to scoop up the queen.
    • Use alcohol (most accurate) or powdered sugar (the bees survive) to dislodge the mites, then count them.
    • Turn that raw count into mites per 100 bees — the number that actually matters — with the free varroa mite calculator. It compares your result to the seasonal threshold and tells you whether to treat, monitor, or hold.

    Thresholds tighten as the season turns. Many beekeepers act around 2-3% in mid-summer and move toward the stricter 1-2% range as fall approaches, precisely because of the winter-bee effect. The calculator applies the right threshold for the time of year so you are not guessing.

    Step 2: Treat on time — and rotate

    If you are over threshold, treat now, as your honey supers come off. Do not wait.

    And do not lean on a single product. Amitraz resistance is now widespread — which is exactly why this year's USDA research is racing to make amitraz effective again. Rotate your chemistries:

    • Formic acid (Formic Pro) penetrates the brood cappings and can be used with bees present, but it needs the right temperature window.
    • Oxalic acid (vaporized or dribbled) has no documented resistance after decades of use, and works best when brood is low.
    • Thymol-based products make a useful rotation option in the right temperatures.

    Step 3: Feed for winter weight — after you treat

    Once the mites are handled, turn to stores. In most of the country a colony needs to go into winter heavy — roughly 60-90 pounds of stores in the North, less in the South.     Step 4: Follow your region's clock

    Don't forget the summer dearth

    Late July is also, across much of the country, the hungriest stretch of the year. Forage dries up and strong colonies start eyeing weaker ones. Keep entrances reduced against robbing, avoid open feeding, and keep clean water near the apiary.

    None of this is glamorous. But the beekeepers whose colonies are booming next April are, overwhelmingly, the ones who took a serious mite count in late summer and did something about it. Take yours this week.
